Block 42
Observing the development of New Belgrade from the beginning until today, one gets the impression that throughout the decades there has been no continuity of adaptation to the current socio-economic conditions and that at the present moment, there is no adequate answer to the question of the future development model of this part of the city.
The two basic ideas of the concept are that block 42 is shaped and viewed integrally, as a unique urban-architectural entity, and that in this sense the entire block, and not only its parts, becomes a marker in space; as well as place the station as an organic part of the block, traffic-wise and functionally integrated. The functional solution of the station is based on the organization of all platforms and all bus, rail, and car traffic at the existing level of the UMP, to avoid complicating the traffic scheme by lowering it to the ground floor level. In this way, under the newly created level, a space is created for all the necessary station contents, which are organized in some kind of flowing space. All contents are fully accessible to all visitors, while the entrance to the platforms is controlled only by entering the glass cubes in which the vertical communications are located. A unique raster is formed for the entire block. The construction of the station, as well as the future buildings, fit into this grid, and all of that in a specific pattern of flattened rectangular fields, which are three-dimensional. Full and empty fields alternate, that is, buildings and holes, interconnected by a green, pedestrian plateau leveled at the level of the platform. In this way, a "double ground floor" is formed on the new level, that is open green public areas between the buildings, connected by pedestrian paths. It should be emphasized that the concept of the station and the rest of the block is functional even without this new level, that is, it is possible to create a public green area with pedestrian paths only on the ground floor level.
